Helping a Young Mother
A tale of strength, resilience, and privilege in our service
An extraordinary young mother has faced immense challenges, and she has inspired us with her grace and resilience.
When she first applied to us for help with her home, this former nurse was a recent widow, caring for her or her seven-year-old twin boys, one of whom lives with a serious illness and disability. Tragically, the family lost the boys’ beloved father unexpectedly.
In a display of solidarity, Rebuilding Together North Suburban Chicago reached out to long-time partner, Kinzie Builders, who spearheaded an awe-inspiring project to renovate their home. Supported by generous vendors like Coyote Construction, Landscape Construction, and Floor & Wall, the team embarked on a mission to transform the family’s living space.
From rehabilitating the deteriorating deck to addressing drainage issues and overgrown vegetation, every effort was made to create a safer, more accessible environment for this resilient family. Kinzie regraded the yard, removed a huge berm, placed sod, landscaped and replaced the large falling-down fence. 101 Mobility moved, rehabbed and extended an existing metal accessibility ramp to reach 60 feet, making it ADA compliant.

Floor & Wall replaced flooring damaged in a basement flood, and addressed the cause of the flooding. GV’s Heating and Cooling replaced the home’s central air when the 40+ year-old system gave out, responding on an emergency basis, just before a heat wave and poor air quality hit.
We returned to this home again, and installed an exterior lift in the front of the home to allow for alternative access for the son. We experienced an enormous sense of privilege in helping this remarkable mother, who expressed deep gratitude for our help.
