A New Beginning
Rehabbing a family’s dilapidated bathroom and bringing accessibility back into their home.
The story begins as it often does, with a deeply compassionate social worker determined to help a family of four who had not had a working tub or permanent shower in their home for almost two years.
The referral contained a page detailing the Mom’s serious health issues with frequent hospitalizations and a disability requiring her to use a wheelchair as she can take only a few steps. The Dad also has major health problems interfering with his ability to work. The parents’ 40-year-old daughter has significant disabilities, and their 30-year-old daughter is hearing impaired, and they live with them. The younger daughter helps to beautifully care for her big sister.
Their small brick bungalow has a working powder room, but their main bathroom was dangerous. It had a large hole in the floor open to the basement below, caused by leaks from the non-functional tub, shower and toilet.
For over a year, this resourceful family was using a portable camping shower which has a 5-gallon tank to hold hot water, placed in a child’s wading pool positioned in the kitchen, to bathe. This pressing repair was the priority, but the home also has many other needs, including a large front window system with serious clouding and broken panes.
Our long-time Rebuilding Together North Suburban Chicago friend and talented contractor, Tony Stasliuk and AJS Construction, transformed their dilapidated bathroom and their lives, gutting it and completely rehabbing it. We provided a beautiful, new, fully transformed bathroom with a walk-in shower that is accessible to the Mom and daughter with the serious disability. In addition, the front bay window system was extremely cloudy and had broken panes of glass. We replaced the entire large front window system.
The family was overjoyed! We have received long emails of thanks and a long expressive thank you in the mail.
I was raised to not personally ask for charity from others and to be a give not a taker. We do not expect good things to happen to us and could not believe it was true when our application was approved. Thank you Rebuilding Together North Suburban Chicago for being the hope and ray of light in so many people’s lives. You truly are God’s angels on earth.
